Buying and Renting

The majority of Swedish people rent their accommodation and rent apartments of varying sizes.  The rental market in Sweden is highly regulated and rental prices are relatively low compared with other parts of Europe. Rentals often include heating, water & sewerage and quite often TV and internet connections.

There are no restrictions on foreign nationals buying property in Sweden. As many Swedes rent rather than own their own house, property prices are much lower than in many other European countries, especially in the northern part of the country.

Property prices can begin as low as 150,000kr (£14,700 or €17,000) in many villages and small towns in the northern half of Sweden. This offers people considering moving to Jokkmokk a great opportunity to purchase a property at a fraction of the cost of most European countries.

Details of properties for sale can be found in local and regional newspapers, on the internet, from estate agents and from housing companies. An estate agent can be used when buying property, although many house sales are completed by the local banks.

The estate agent's fees, (normally around 3-5% of the sale price) are paid by the seller of the property. The banks charge an admin fee for processing the paperwork of the actual purchase. A deposit of 20% is usually payable to the seller at the time of exchanging contracts to hold the property.
