The Population

The general population of the region is made up of Swedish nationals, the Sami, EU nationals and to a lesser extent, global nationals. Within the Jokkmokk Municipality, the highest populations can be found in Jokkmokk town itself, followed by Vuollerim and then Porjus.
The Jokkmokk region also has many small villages and hamlets scattered over the county. The small villages and hamlets tend to attract people moving into the area.
The Jokkmokk Municipality has been home to the Sami people for thousands of years. The Sami culture and customs are still very strong in the region and include dedicated schools, associations and business enterprises.
Drawing inspiration from Sami folk culture, as well as from the stunning beauty of the land itself, these traditions have maintained a vitality and bold simplicity that are now appreciated all over the world.
Jokkmokks Municipailty is part of this culture and embodies Swedish design and architecture which includes the clean, sophisticated designs that we now associate as much with modernism itself, as with Scandinavia and Sweden in particular. These factors indicate the strength of the Sami people within the community and wider population of Jokkmokk.
