Swedish Lapland

Misconceptions about the cost of living and the climate in Northern Sweden are perhaps the main reasons why Swedish Lapland remains a largely undiscovered destination.

Sweden offers settlers a high standard of living and ranks as one of the highest countries for lifestyle and prosperity. The Municipality of Jokkmokk lies just above the Arctic Circle and is Sweden’s second largest district. The total area is over 10,000 square kilometres and consists of thousands of lakes, several large rivers and thousands of square kilometres of forest.

The population of Jokkmokk numbers a few thousand. These people occupy an area larger than many major European cities. Half of Jokkmokks boundaries consist of extensive mountain regions, national parks and a large number of nature reserves. Sarek, Padjelanta, Stora Sjöfallet and Muddus national parks belong to the Laponia region, which in December 1996 was nominated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.

The Laponia region was chosen as a combined nature and cultural heritage site, which is rare and for nature lovers, confirms Jokkmokk Municipality as the last true wilderness of Europe.
